This is one of the classic Pyrenees climbs. A 5+ star route. Beautiful high valleys, big mountains … absolutely stunning and fun!
As mapped, the course is a loop and the col d’Aubisque is approached from the north via the Col du Soulor. This route is often neglected but probably the most scenic and with the least amount of traffic. Between the Col du Soulor and the Col d’Aubisque the route traverses the spectacular Cirque du Litorand (not to be missed!).
The route can also be done as an out and back starting in Arthez-d’Asson at mile 12. As an out and back, the only thing given up is the west side descent from the Col d’Aubuisque. The descent from the summit to Gourette is very scenic.
– Loop: 49 miles / 6700 ft gain
– Location: Louvie-Juzon
– Date Posted: ~ July 2017
– Terrain: The first 15 miles and the last 7 miles are relatively flat. Mile 15 to 32 is a long sustained climb with one dip after the Col du Soulor. Grades up to 10%.
– Pavement: Local transit road –> backcountry road. A mix of smooth tarmac and light chip seal.
– Traffic: Very little to little.
There are several public parking lots near the center of town.
