Grande Ronde Valley

Development Route

If historic architecture, quiet roads, and scenic views are “your thing”, this ride is for you!

It is a mixed surface route starting and ending at the Grande Hot Springs RV Resort outside La Grande, OR. The longest gravel sector (High Valley Road) is particularly scenic as it climbs above the valley offering great views. But … the descent on High Valley Road is quite steep and can be loose, thick gravel.

Be sure to do a quick spin through the town of Cove, at ~ mile 20. “Cove is on the valley’s eastern slope, nestled between the Wallowa Mountains and adjacent ridges. Cove’s name comes from the niche created by the base of Mt. Fanny, Mill Creek, and the ridges to the south. The views are stunning, the sunsets are beautiful, and the soil rich.”

The Dirty Freehub Team has not ridden this route, thus the Training Route designation.

Ride description and pictures are by AlexA, a Bend friend of ours, he has ridden the route and made the recommendation to us.

Ride date: 10-2-20: TCX file indicated the start of this very enjoyable ride began at the Le Grande Hot Springs Resort Hotel, not the Le Grande Hot Springs Resort RV park (where I was camped). This ride felt like a delightful bicycle tour as it included quaint small towns as well as ranch and farm countryside. Quiet and serene with good gravel and smooth pavement. Note: Woodruff Lane does not continue through to Peach Rd. It dead ends at a farm/ranch. I turned left (South) onto Hawkins Road which took me to Le Grand-Baker Hwy (OR Hwy 203) and then right towards the designated route and return to start.
