Bust Your Butte

Development Route / by Captain ‘O’ & Gravel Girl

This route is from the 2018 gravel race course in and around the China Hat / Horse Butte area of the same name. We made some minor modifications to the original route, adding in a bit of single track. JenK, who did the race in 2018 describes the route as “Some great, smooth gravel … some not so great red cinder gravel … some thick pumice sand … and some washboard. That’s what you get on a gravel ride! Epic views.”

We have classified this route as a Training Route due to (a) the mixed and sometimes unpleasant riding surfaces (When it rides good, it is really fun!) and (b) the route uses some of the same roads as the Horse to Horse route, a 5 Star Route. The Dirty Freehub Team has ridden this route in its entirety.

We recommended riding this in early spring / late fall when the washboard is less and the sand is more hard packed. Also, check in on the Riding Oregon Gravel Facebook group for conditions.
