Gravel Girl rates this a 5 star route!  Epic views and good riding ….

The ride begins with a moderate 4.5 mile climb on paved. The road then turns to gravel where the fun (and views) really begin.  The first mile of two of the gravel can be heavily “washboarded “- pick your line carefully and you will be alright.  As you ride along, the views just keep getting better and better.  At mile 7, you begin the long, steep descent to the canyon floor (on average 9 % grade).  Pick up the canyon floor and begin a long gradual climb until you see Apache Lake.  At this point, the road widens a bit.  From here to Roosevelt vista viewpoint, there are a series of short climbs with some flat interspersed.  Turn around at the viewpoint and repeat the fun on the way back!

To shorten the ride an optional starting point is at the paved / gravel transition (at about mile 5.5). The ride is then 44 miles and 5500 ft of gain. There is a gravel pull out to the north about 100 yards before the paved / gravel transition.
