An Urban Adventure Ride (in Bend!)

15 Oct

Looking for a fun, low key ride? Or a great recovery ride? This is it!

Why do I like this ride?
– It has close, in-town access ==> the ride starts and finishes in Drake Park.
– It is scenic ==> river and mountain views.
– It has varied terrain ==> dirt path, gravel roads, paved path, cobbled pavers, and a little single track.
– It has very little car traffic ==> maybe 10 percent of this route is on paved road.
– It highlights some of the “coolest” parks in Bend ==> the First Street Rapids and Riverbend, Miller and Drake Park.

Parts of this route share paths with walkers and hikers. I encourage you to slow down, say “hi”, and issue the helpful “on your left” when over taking some one.  This ride, like most adventure / gravel rides, has a lot of nuanced turns. The easiest way to follow the ride is by downloading the GPS file to a Garmin device or using the Ride app for iPhones and Androids.

The Ride
The ride starts in Drake Park. You pass over the foot bridge and head north on residential streets to First Street Rapids and catch the Deschutes River trail. Follow the trail until the end (and again, be mindful of others using the trail). The trail ends within the Awbrey Meadows neighborhood. Climb up to Mt. Washington Drive and go right (south) towards the Mt. Washington / Shevlin Park road roundabout. Go straight through the roundabout. Take a right towards Discovery Park and meander along in the neighborhood until you come to the paved path paralleling Shevlin Park road. Enter into Shevlin Commons / Shevlin Park and take the paved foot path several hundred yards, then bear left onto the gray gravel path. Follow this path / dirt road until you come to the Brooks Scanlon road.

Follow the Brooks Scanlon road until you come to Skyliners road. Head downhill. Take the right onto dirt that leads you to the top of the “pump track”. Follow the single track trail along the “pump track” (on the right hand side) until you come to Phi’s parking area. Go right on the old paved road to the end. Go left onto the white sand road, follow this to the “Lair”. Follow the old dirt road that heads slightly uphill. Several mountain bike trails will cross this road (Marivin’s and COD). The road will come to a natural “T”. Go left and follow the most obvious and worn roads to Cascade Lakes Highway.

At the highway, head back towards Bend along the golf course. At the end of the golf course and at intersection of the dirt road, catch the red cinder path. Follow this through the “Good Dog” parking area and continue until you come upon the big boulders in the path. Just after the boulders, take a left onto the single track. This is short section. Go right onto the gray gravel and follow the gray gravel path until the Sunrise housing sub division. Catch the paved path for a couple of hundred yards and then go right into Mt. Bachelor Village.

At the Reed Market roundabout go right towards the river. Just before the bridge, take the a subtle right to a path that takes you under the bridge and along the water. Follow the red dirt path to the pavers and follow the pavers to the paved path to the Les Schwab amphitheater. Ride to McKay park, cross the foot bridge (and the in construction water park bridge) to the paved path. Go through Miller Park on the cobbled pavers and drop into Riverfront Street back to Drake Park. Follow the cobbled pavers in Drake Park back to the foot bride.

Happy riding.
